A Connection to the Land

Located in Concord, MA, Saltbox Farm is a working 10-acre family farm that reminds us of our connections to the land. It’s a place to learn respect for what we grow and for the changing seasons. It is a source of inspiration not only for what we cook and eat, but also for how we live. We are lucky to have Mark Congdon as our Farm Manager and a passionate team of farmers who take care of this special place all year long. 

At Saltbox Farm, we use only organic and sustainable farming practices with no synthetic herbicides or pesticides. We believe that the best quality produce comes from the best quality soil. Through crop rotations, cover crops and diverse compost applications, we can build healthy and fertile soil to produce the most nutrient rich and delicious vegetables possible. 

We supply a wide variety of fresh, local ingredients to home cooks through our CSA program and seasonal farmstand, and to Saltbox Kitchen, our café & brewery located in the heart of West Concord. We also use our produce for our full-service catering and private events business. 











Farming, Food and Family

Saltbox Farm has been in Chef Ben Elliott’s family for almost three-quarters of a century. Built by Ben’s grandparents, Edward and Emilie Thomas, in the 1940s, the farm got its name from the saltbox style of the main house. During that time it has seen generations of children grow, families celebrate, snows come, springs arrive and harvests abound. 

Ben spent much of his childhood at Saltbox Farm with his grandparents. It was a typical family farm with a variety of animals for their own use, including chickens and geese for eggs and meat, pigs, sheep, horses, and a cow for milking. They maintained a large vegetable garden and Ben’s grandmother put up much of the late summer harvest to enjoy during the cold winters. There was also an orchard, berries for jam making, and bee hives for honey.

In the kitchen, Ben would help his grandmother, a talented home cook, prepare classic New England dishes consisting almost entirely of ingredients from the farm, using recipes from a well-worn 1932 edition of the Fanny Farmer cookbook. With his grandfather, Ben spent countless hours in the gardens, planting, weeding, and harvesting and it was on this farm that a love of eating, cooking, and farming was born.

Ben and his family moved to the farm in 2004, and began restoring it in 2008. In 2009, Ben left the fast-paced urban restaurant scene to work full-time to establish a range of businesses at Saltbox Farm through which he could share his passion for cooking with fresh, local ingredients.

Imagine being side-by-side in the kitchen with professional chefs discovering new dishes and learning first-hand new techniques and refining your cooking skills, all in a quintessential New England farm setting. At The Cooking School at Saltbox Farm, we provide our guests with a truly unique experience of intimate hands-on cooking classes held in an old world cottage with a fully outfitted kitchen, featuring an 8-burner professional range and an array of specialty cooking equipment to teach a variety of techniques. During the growing season, guests collect fresh ingredients from the herb and vegetable garden just steps from the teaching kitchen. Once the meal has been prepared, you will enjoy your handiwork in our rustic dining room.

Know your farmer

Aside from growing it yourself, we can’t think of a better way to get the freshest, most seasonal and local ingredients than buying direct from the farm. 

From mid-June until November, CSA members will receive a weekly share of the farm’s bounty. We offer a weekly market-style, You-Choose share, whereby members will visit Saltbox Farm to choose a week’s worth of produce from the harvest, with specified amounts based on availability that week. In addition, certain offerings will be You-Pick, like green beans, husk cherries, and cherry tomatoes. They will be available at the time shares are picked up. We offer Full and Half shares, both of which are picked up weekly. Full shares are $800, and are enough for 3-4 people; Half shares are $500, and enough for 1-2 people. This method gives members greater flexibility in what they take home each week, allows the farmers to spend less time parceling out boxed shares, and creates an opportunity to experience time on the farm alongside the farmers and other CSA members. Members will also receive a weekly newsletter with a list of produce to expect, farm updates, and recommended recipes to try at home. 

Each season, we grow a diverse range of produce, from seasonal favorites to less common varietals. All of our veggies are grown using only organic and sustainable farming practices with no synthetic herbicides or pesticides. We believe that the best quality produce comes from the best quality soil, and for that we spend all season building up the structure and nutrients using techniques like cover cropping, crop rotation, and compost application. We hope to share this taste of our farm with you!

private Events

Saltbox Farm can be rented for a variety of private events, including weddings, farm dinners, cocktail parties, or anything else you can dream of.

At the farm, we can host up to 14 guests for a private cooking class in our intimate, rustic farmhouse that's home to The Cooking School at Saltbox Farm. Private cooking classes are perfect for small gatherings such as birthdays, bachelorette parties, or corporate team-building events.

For larger groups, we can accommodate a variety of events outside in the fields of our working farm, a singular experience in a one-of-a-kind setting. Imagine long family-style tables set up between the rows of grapes, or in the shadows of the hop yard. Table settings could include just-picked flowers alongside dishes that include food grown right at the farm paired with beer made from Saltbox Farm hops.
